Silenced Sibling*

* your sibling has a severe mental illness that negatively impacts your life as well
At the risk of sounding snarky...no one knows the technical term for our experience BECAUSE our stories are silenced.
Technically, we are called Glass Children because people often see right through/around us instead of realizing the Glass Sibling is affected by the chaos as well. We smile and act 'fine' whether we are or not, attempting to solve our own problems since we don't have consistent help. As a result, Glass Siblings struggle with feeling invisible and alone, taking on too much responsibility too soon and coping in ways that are not always good for our own mental health.

Are you a sibling who feels silenced and invisible?

Are you a parent trying to find help and peer support for the 'normal' kid from people who have been there?

Are you a Glass Sibling?

🤔Do you feel overlooked because your sibling with special needs has a 'More Obvious' problem?

🤔Are you glad they get the help they need but resent the fact you don't get help yourself?

🤔Do people look right past you because you don’t show your problems, and your sibling with special needs can’t help but show theirs?

🤔Are you about to explode because you stuffed everything down to appear fine and not add to your family’s chaos?

🤔Have you taught yourself to survive without help for so long that now you don’t know how to ask for it or receive it? Even though you know you desperately want someone to see the real you?

If so, you came to the right place.

What is a Glass Sibling?

Glass Children are the siblings of someone with a disability, whether mental or physical. They often go unnoticed in the chaos since they appear to be fine in comparison to the obvious need, and often also feel they must be perfect to reduce the family's problems. This is especially prevalent in families who have a child with severe mental illnesses, since most time, energy, and effort seems to go toward managing that and not to the 'normal' siblings.

Overlooked in favor of their special needs sibling, Glass Siblings hide in plain sight and struggle through life unseen. Silenced by circumstances and learned behaviors based on the reactions of others, Glass Siblings struggle to find the help they need.

So we learn to believe a lie:

😶‍🌫️ I am invisible, because people see my sibling and don't see me

😶‍🌫️ I have to be perfect so I don't cause more problems for my parents

😶‍🌫️ I can't trust people to help me, they all help my sibling instead

Don't Do Life Alone

You are not the only Glass Child. Your family is not the only one going through this. And you do not have to do life alone. Join the community of other Glass Children like you as we support one another in this journey.

Nice to meet you!

Hi! I’m Shari. I am a Glass Child in a family who adopted twin boys. Both boys had ADHD, RAD, ODD, and several other severe mental health issues. I felt invisible, unwanted, and unnoticed in the chaos. By God's grace I was able to learn to live life to the fullest again. Now, I help others do the same and overcome the silence to learn to let themselves be seen and heard again.
